With an ongoing relationship of development projects with different parts of Simon Fraser University (Education Research, PKP, OJS) elemental and webkitchen were approached to rework the entire front end design for the SFU Library website. This was done in conjunction with the in house development group moving the primary location website and the 2 branch websites into a single Drupal 7 installation from numerous disparate Drupal 6 installations and custom designed database implementations.

Working within the established SFU Common Look and Feel, elemental developed the layouts and specified the responsive design that has now been rolled out over the last 8 months.

We were excited to work with the Canadian Seed Institute (CSI), an organization which delivers accreditation and monitoring programs for the Canadian seed industry and through its sister organization, The Centre for Systems Integration, simplifies certification under multiple programs for the agricultural industry.

Originally an ASP site, there were lots of interesting challenges in developing the two CSI sites as fully-bilingual, integrated sub-sites. Leveraging Organic Groups and a bevy of other modules, including custom modules specific developed for this project, much of the site lives below the public view. CSI staff and its auditors, inspectors and clients can login to access various document libraries specific to their group membership.

    • First Nations Child and Family Caring Society of Canada

The First Nations Child & Family Caring Society of Canada was developed at a national meeting of First Nations child and family service agencies (FNCFSA), held at the Squamish First Nation in 1998. Award-winning, the Caring Society works with partners in Canada and around the world to promote the rights of Indigenous children, youth and families.

Working closely with both the Society and its graphic designer the site was redeveloped from the ground up to become the major marketing and communications hub for the organization.

Not only did this project encompass a full Drupal 6 to Drupal 7 migration, it involved a complete and substantial re-architecting of the site structure, custom module development to accomodate multiple user and subscriber databases, multiple subsite "campaign" sections with custom theming for each, as well as an eye to both multiple languages and full accessibility access.

Another site based on Open Journal System (OJS), The Journal of Student Science and Technology (JSST) includes a blend of traditional journal content alongside a large number of static pages (describing the organization and its activities, etc.).

Indeed, as a long term objective, JSST anticipates adopting a CMS to host its organization content in the coming years. But, it also requires a pragmatic interim solution, and with that immediate requirement, the Journal contracted webkitchen to develop a clean and modern theme in OJS, one component of which is a new integrated menu block that allows users to easily navigate the static pages, all implemented without the use of Jquery/JavaScript.
